Sandra Sherman’s Jazz Rhythm Patterns
In the lecture she give 4 basic rhythms and tell where we can break it.
a. 1 2 & 3 4
b. 1 & 2 3 4 - break rhythm - more notes than main rhythm or time shifted if same number of notes.
c. 1 2 3 4 & 1 2 3 & 4
d. 1 & 2 & 3 4 - break rhythm ( coz 3 notes)
Then when combining these we have to thinking either in terms of 2 or 4 bars. For eg 2 bars then we play 'a' in bar 1 and 'b' in bar 2. We played b in 2nd bar or 4th bar coz it is a break rhythm. We can begin with b in 1st but then we have to use even bigger break in 2nd and 4th bars.
Some combination eg -
1. a + b
2. a + d
3. b + d
4. c + d
4. Scales and Song Melody
5. Improvisation
